With one out and the bases loaded, Edgefield's Greg Bryant sent the first pitch he saw over the leftfield fence for a grandslam, putting Edgefield up 4-0 in the top half of the first inning.
Clinton quickly responded in their half of the first, scoring four runs of their own, highlighted by an Austin Copeland homerun.
Clinton tacked on one run in the third and fourth innings as well as three in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Wil Stewart pitched a complete game for Clinton, allowing three earned runs off of five hits, while striking out five. After giving up four runs in the first inning, Stewart held Edgefield scoreless through the next five innings, only facing two over the minimum during that span.
“What a great pitching performance by Wil Stewart,” said Clinton head coach Matt Stewart. “He was lights out after that 1st inning, didn't get rattled after giving up that grandslam and completely shut them down for the next five innings. Just goes to show what kind of competitor he is.”
Austin Copeland was 2 for 3 with two HRs and 3 RBIs. Wilson Wages was 2 for 3 with a HR and 2 RBIs. Landen Vo was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
“Hats off to Edgefield County, they are a very good baseball team,” said Stewart. “We could have folded our tents there so to speak during that 1st inning when they put up four on us in a hurry. Really proud of our kids for battling back and not getting down."
