Clinton remains in 3A, sees a few changes to region lineup

Clinton High School will remain in 3A after the SCHSL announced their realignment on Wednesday for 2018-20.

Clinton will stay in Region 3-3A but some of their region mates have changed. Chapman and Broome have moved to Region 2. Mid-Carolina, Newberry and Woodruff remain from Region 3 and they add Emerald in Greenwood.

3A will have four five-team regions and four six-team regions. Clinton now playing in a five-team region means that the Red Devil football team will only play four region games and will have to schedule another non-region game starting next season.

Clinton will be in the middle of the pack as far as size is concerned for 3A schools. CHS now has 824 students and the range for 3A goes from 988 (Camden) to 641 (Landrum).

CHS athletic director Nickie Templeton likes the makeup of the new region and feels that the parity gives her teams a better chance to win championships.

“It’s better for travel and it matches everyone up, apples for apples,” said Templeton. “It’s nice to see your kids compete when you feel like the playing field is even. It’s very fair.”
