Yellow Jackets blow past Red Devils, 41-0

Beyond all doubt, Greer was better at football than Clinton on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets’ shifty quarterback, Treyvion Houston, ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more. His 104 rushing yards and 152 passing were more than enough to push Greer (2-1) past the Red Devils in the Wilder Stadium home opener.

Greer was balanced, and Clinton (0-2) was all rushing. Literally. The passing yardage was 152-0, Greer. Clinton got rushing productivity from Kris Holmes and Mark Wise, who combined for 164 yards, but Greer was effective in limiting the Red Devils to short gains on first down all night.

“We’ve got to be able to run at the right angles, and we’ve got to hold double-team blocks,” Clinton head coach Andrew Webb said. “There’s a big difference between second-and-six and second-and-eight. We have to do the little things it takes to run this offense.”

Greer started quickly, advancing the opening kick nearly to midfield and scoring four plays later on a 40-yard dash by Dre Williams.

Clinton drove to the Yellow Jacket 20 in the second quarter, but Jacob Harris picked off Konnor Richardson’s fourth-down pass, and Houston scored his first rushing touchdown in the final minute of the half to hike Greer’s lead to 21-0.

Houston’s second rushing touchdown occurred in the final minute of the third quarter, most of which was a stalemate, but the Red Devil defense yielded two more Yellow Jacket scores in the final period.

“We moved the ball decent at times on offense,” Webb said. “When you run this offense, you’ve got to be able to move the ball on the ground consistently in order for the passing game to pop open.

“On defense, we were chaotic at times,” he added. “When we don’t know what we’re doing, we look chaotic. We didn’t follow some basic simple rules. There are things we can fix, but we’ve got to get better.”

Reserve Titus Hood gave the Red Devils a bit of a fourth-quarter boost with 39 rushing yards in six carries. Greer piled up 360 yards and even outrushed Clinton, 208-192.
