Wednesday night in the Emerald High School gymnasium, Laurens senior big man Ryan Dacre made a statement.

Dacre has been playing improved basketball on the defensive end for the past few games. In a 72-61 win over the Clinton Red Devils in the opening round of the Emerald City Classic, Dacre found the offensive side of his game with a career-high 22 points.

This game marks the third time Dacre has been matched up against Zay Hurley, a preseason top 5 player in AAA. For the first two games, Dacre scored 12 points and Hurley scored 11. Dacre outscored Hurley 22-2 on Wednesday night and was a force on the defensive end of the floor.

This matchup was the third of the season, with each team holding serve on their home court. Was it Clinton County…was it Laurens County? With the win, the Raiders decided it would be Laurens County for another season.

Dacre scored seven points in the first quarter to help the Raiders to an 11-8 lead. He followed that up with nine points in the second quarter to give the Raiders a 34-30 lead at the break. Despite 10 points from Zay Bennett in the quarter, Laurens went on an 8-3 run in the last 1:31 to take the lead at halftime.

Clinton came out strong to start the third quarter and took the lead. Laurens battled back and outscored the Red Devils 13-3 in the final 3:34 in the quarter to increase their lead to 52-44.

The Raiders started the fourth quarter with a 9-3 run to go on top 61-47 with 5:18 to play. Laurens was able to hit free throws down the stretch to secure the 72-61 win.

Dee Foster scored 14 points for the Raiders, followed by Josh Greene with 13 and Christian Anderson and Carson Todd with eight each.

JD Payne paced the Red Devils with 19 points, followed by Bennett with 18 and Jahleed Cook with nine.

Clinton will play Greenwood on Thursday at 4:30pm. Laurens will play B-HP on Thursday at 6pm. Both games will be played at Emerald High School.
