One person dead after 2-vehicle accident in Laurens County

One person is dead after a two-vehicle accident on Tuesday night in Laurens County.

The incident occurred just before midnight on I-26 eastbound at mile marker 61 near Joanna.

According to the SC Highway Patrol (SCHP), one vehicle involved was a 1998 tractor-trailer driven by a 53-year-old Florida man. There were no passengers in this vehicle. The second vehicle was a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 49-year-old Sumter man. There was a passenger in the front seat and a passenger in the back set of this vehicle.

The SCHP reports that both vehicles were traveling eastbound on I-26 when the Jeep Grand Cherokee struck the back of the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. The driver of the Jeep was not wearing a seatbelt, was injured and was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital. A juvenile was in the back seat of the Jeep and was not wearing a seatbelt. The juvenile was injured and airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The fatality victim was the passenger in the front seat of the Jeep. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Laurens County Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek.

Cheek identified the fatality victim as Margaret Brookins, 46, of 4654 Ragin Rd. in Sumter. Cheek said the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
