Plenty of food and fun at 17th annual Squealin' on the Square

Despite rainy weather on Saturday, the 17th annual Squealin’ on the Square BBQ cook-off and festival made good on two days of music, food and fun in downtown Laurens. 

Squealin’ on the Square was presented by Main Street Laurens, PRTC, Laurens CPW and the City of Laurens. The streets of downtown Laurens were filled with food vendors, arts and crafts, contests, music, amusement rides and much more.

As a KCBS sanctioned event, Squealin’ on the Square participated in the new Palmetto BBQ Series SC BBQ Championship. This new competition series will award the best BBQ competitor in SC who has the highest cumulative points for participating in at least 4 of the 6 KCBS sanctioned events in SC.

In the Squealin' on the Square BBQ cook-off, the Grand Champion was Kevin Merritt of Summerville, SC. Midnight Burn was the reserve grand champion. Midnight Burn was first in chicken. Sauced! BBQ was first in pork ribs. Smoke Central BBQ was first in pork. Hickory BBQ Company was first in brisket.

Saturday featured the ugliest tractor contest, petting zoo, pickle eating contest, hawg calling contest and Zaxby’s Insane Fireman’s Challenge & Wing Eating Contest. Music on Saturday included Tugaloo Holler, The Flying Saucers, Jukebox 45 and Mac Arnold and Plate Full of Blues.
