Born in Laurens, SC, he was a son of the late Boyd Edgar and Mattie Kelly Hipp. Melvin was a US Army Veteran and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Laurens. He attended Ford High School and retired from 3M of Laurens and its predecessor after 25+ years.
He will be remembered as a soft spoken, loving father and husband whom enjoyed antiques, auctions, and collectables and never missed the chance for a bargain.
He is survived by his spouse of 53 years, Joyce Ann Owens Hipp; children, Donna Charlene Bricker and husband Chester of Simpsonville, SC, Gwendolyn Ann Hipp of Laurens, SC, Lisa Marie Douglas and husband Allen of Edgefield SC, niece and considered as daughter, Deborah Jean Bibb and husband Dale of Laurens, SC; five grandchildren; Chrystal Proffitt Laird of Fountain Inn, SC, Anthony Proffitt of Laurens, SC, Brandon McKinney of Edgefield, SC, Haley Danielle Pritchett of Greer, SC, and Trevin Douglas of Jacksonville, FL; five great-grandchildren; brother, Arthur Hipp of Greenwood, SC, and sister, Lois Reames of Laurens, SC.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was predeceased by his brother, James Hipp.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Chaplain Donna Stroud.
The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary from 9:30-10:30 am on Wednesday.
