Johnny Lee Shumate - Laurens

Mr. Johnny Lee Shumate, better known as Rock Shumate, died Tuesday, February 6, 2018, in Laurens.

Born in Laurens, South Carolina a son of Mr. A.D. Shumate and the late Mrs. Eula Clardy Shumate. He attended the public schools of Laurens County and was a 1972 graduate of Laurens High School where he was an outstanding football player. After his employment with Laurens Glass, he became an all-around “Mr. Handy Man”- a jack of all trades- painter, brick mason, carpenter, singer, and D.J.  

He is survived by his wife, Audrey W. Shumate of Laurens, South Carolina; one a son, Dashane (Sharonda) Richardson of Syracuse, New York; a daughter, Jendayi (Charles) Shumate of Laurens, South Carolina; his father, A. D. Shumate of Laurens, South Carolina; three sisters, Gladys Grant, Roberta (William) Young, and Lutricia Shumate all of Laurens, South Carolina; two brothers, Willie Aaron Shumate of Columbia, South Carolina and Willie B. (Betty) Madden of Laurens, South Carolina, and six grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the Duncan Creek Baptist Church with Reverend C. Lamont Jones and Reverend Derrick Barksdale, Sr., officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family is at 1012 S. Harper St. Extension the home of his sister, Gladys Grant.
