It was frigid over on the third-base side.
Every player in the Laurens batting order scored at least once – Ty Foster, Jalen Bragg, Morgan French and Kobe Williams each scored twice – and the Raiders needed only four and a half innings to defeat the Clinton Red Devils, 13-0.
Things will undoubtedly get better for Clinton. The Red Devils’ four pitchers combined to allow seven walks. Times were even tough when they didn’t. The fielders committed six errors behind the unfortunate hurlers. Laurens (7-2) scored 13 runs off only six hits.
Nate Towles went the distance – five innings in this case – and held the Red Devils to three hits. Dakota Webb, Caleb Riddle and Thomas Hellams each had singles. Riddle and Hellams had theirs back-to-back in the fourth inning.
The Raiders’ leadoff batter, Ty Foster, singled in the first, second, third and fourth innings himself. The game’s only extra-base hit was Ethan Jones’ first-inning double.
“Nate (Towles) went there and made the pitches, and we made the plays behind him,” said LDHS head coach Tori Patterson. “As long as we can pitch and play defense, we’ve got a chance to win any ballgame.”
The first bad sign for the visitors was the junior varsity game in which Laurens spotted Clinton a 6-0 lead and stormed back to win, 7-6.
