Heisey, Marlett headline All-County girls basketball team

The 2016-2017 high school girls basketball season came to a close for Laurens County teams on Feb. 25 with a loss in the state championship game by the Laurens Academy Lady Crusaders.

Laurens Academy, Laurens District High School and Clinton High School had successful seasons in girls basketball. Each team had players that dominated at times but also provided consistent scoring, defense and leadership.

Each year, GoLaurens.com/GoClinton.com selects the All-County girls basketball team to recognize the top players in Laurens County.

Nominations for outstanding players and coaches are submitted from coaches representing Laurens Academy, Laurens District High School, and Clinton High School.

Laurens County Player of the Year – Cali Heisey, Laurens District High School

Heisey is a junior guard, who led Laurens with 14 points per game and two rebounds per game. She was named to the All-Region team.

Heisey scored 26 points against Palmetto, 28 points against Greenwood and 29 points against Woodruff during the season.

Laurens County Coach of the Year – Jason Marlett, Laurens Academy

Led Laurens Academy to a 26-4 record and a perfect 8-0 in region play. Won region tournament title and was the No. 1 seed in the SCISA Class A state tournament. Lost to Dorchester Academy in state championship game.

Here’s a look at the remainder of the 2016-2017 GoLaurens.com/GoClinton.com All-County girl’s team:

Terriaunna Bennett – CHS

Freshman averaged 6 PPG, 2 APG, 5.5 RPG and 2.5 SPG.  

Savanna Campbell – CHS

Sophomore averaged 7 PPG, 1.5 APG and 2 SPG. Shot 30% from 3 pt. line and 71% from FT line.

Taylor Campbell – LA

Junior averaged 13.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 6 APG and 3.1 SPG. Named Region Player of the Year, All-State tournament team and voted to the SCISA North-South All-Star game. Scored 25 points in state championship game

Alexus Espinoza – LDHS

Junior averaged 5 PPG, 3 SPG and 3.5 RPG.

Qua Fortson – LDHS

7th grade starting point guard averaged 5 PPG, 2 RPG and 2 APG.

MK Kelly – CHS

Senior averaged 7.5 PPG, 2.5 APG and 2 SPG. Shot 60% from the FT line. Named to All-Region team.

Ruthie Moore – LA

Sophomore guard averaged 16.8 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 4.5 APG and 4 SPG. Scored her 1000th career varsity point this season. Voted All-Region, All-State tournament team, North-South All-Star, Region Tourney MVP.

Blair Quarles – LA

Freshman forward averaged 5 PPG, 5 RPG, 2 SPG. Named to All-Region team and SCISA North-South All-Star game.

Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon – LDHS

Junior averaged 9 PPG and 2 RPG.   

Reagan Williamson - LA

Freshman guard averaged 7 PPG and 4 RPG.

The All-County boys basketball team will be announced on Tuesday, March 21.
