Delio doubles down on Lady Raiders win over Clinton

It took extra innings to decide the first round of the Laurens County softball championship on Monday night at Clinton High School.

The Laurens Lady Raiders broke a 9-9 tie with three runs in the top of the eighth to defeat the Clinton Lady Red Devils, 12-9. The same two teams will match up on Thursday at LDHS at 7pm.

In the eighth, Matti Cantrell singled and advanced to second on an error to get the inning started for Laurens. CJ Ginn was intentionally walked and Annsley Nelson reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Rachel Delio cleared the bases with a double to left field to put Laurens on top 12-9.

Clinton went down in order in the bottom of the eighth to give Laurens the win.

Clinton took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. Laurens scored three in the second and two in the third to go on top 5-2.

The Lady Raiders scored one in the fourth and three in the sixth. Clinton exploded for six runs in the fourth, setting up the 9-9 tie going to extra innings.

For Laurens, CJ Ginn was 3 for 3 with two doubles, homerun and four RBIs. Delio was 2 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Cassy Plaia and Cantrell each had two hits. Nelson was 1 for 5 with a homerun.  

Makayla Pearson led Clinton, going 2 for 4 with a double, triple and an RBI. Hunter Benson was 2 for 5 with a double. Kalen Richardson and Dianna Martin were both 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Delio earned the win for the Lady Raiders. She went seven and a third innings, allowing seven runs, six hits, striking out five, and walking one.

Laurens improves to 11-8 on the season and 4-2 in region play.
