How It Happened
Furman got a run in the first inning to take the early lead. Brandon Elmy hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season, a solo drive to left, to put the Paladins in front 1-0.
PC answered with a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game. Brett Auckland doubled with one out to put a runner in scoring position. Glen Casaceli drove him in a few pitches later with an RBI single up the middle to make it a 1-1 game.
Furman responded with two run in the bottom half of the third. Brett Huebner drew a leadoff walk but was caught stealing for the first out. Jake Crawford followed with a single through the left side to put another runner on first. Jabari Richards then hit the second Furman home run of the game with a drive to center to bring in two and make it a 3-1 lead.
The Blue Hose then one-upped the Paladins with a three-run fourth inning. Nick Guimbarda got things started with a one-out walk but Furman got a strikeout for the second out. Nick Wise then tried to help himself with a single to left center to put runners on the corners. Auckland then delivered his second double of the game with a line drive to left center to score Guimbarda and Wise, tying the game at 3-3. Casaceli added one more with his second RBI single of the game, this one to right center, to PC back in front 4-3.
Furman evened the game once again with a run in the fourth before adding two more in the fifth to retake the lead. Sky Overton opened the inning with a walk and moved to third after a pair of wild pitches and Sims Griffith scored him with a sac fly to center to tie the game at 4-4. An RBI single by Cameron Whitehead and a sac fly by Huebner plate two Paladins in the fifth to push the lead to 6-4.
Presbyterian cut the lead to one in the top of the seventh. Cletis Avery hit a solo home run with a deep drive to left, his third long ball of the season, to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
The Paladins busted it open with a four-run bottom half of the seventh. Huebner drove in the first with a one-out, RBI double and Crawford followed with a two-RBI double to left field. Two batters later, Grote singled to right to score one more and make it a 10-5 game.
Both teams added a run in the eighth. Tanner Byrd singled to left for his first career RBI, scoring Guy Casaceli, who pinch ran for TJ Richardson, to cut it to 10-6. A sac fly to left by Griffith scored Costa to make it the eventual final score of 11-6.
Pitchers of Record
Tyler Kimbrell (1-0) earned the win for the Paladins, allowing a lone run on two hits in 3.0 innings of work out of the bullpen.
Ethan Wortkoetter (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs despite not allowing a hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
Heath Hawkins earned his first save of the season, coming in with the tying run on deck in the eighth. The righty worked 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the game, allowing one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Player of the Game
Brett Auckland was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs in the contest. It was the eighth multi-hit game of the season for the lefty and his second three-hit game. The senior doubled in both of his first two at-bats and subsequently scored both times, while driving in two with the second one.
- Glen Casaceli was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk on the night. The righty had an RBI single in each of his first two at-bats.
- Cletis Avery hit his third home run of the season with a deep drive to left field in the seventh. The long ball ties for the team lead, while giving him 21 RBIs on the year, third-most on the squad.
- Seven different players recorded a hit in the game, as PC combined for 10 as a team.
PC returns home for a three-game Big South series against High Point at PC Baseball Complex, beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
