The Laurens Raiders found out exactly why the Chapman Panthers are the No. 1 ranked team in 3A after a 61-24 defeat on Friday night in Inman.

Chapman can score in a hurry and they have a bevy of weapons.

The Raiders turned the ball over three times in the first half and those miscues led to 21 points for the home team. Another turnover in the second half, led to a fourth Panther touchdown off Raider turnovers.

Chapman (3-0) is averaging 51 points per game this season. Against the Raiders, the Panthers accounted for 530 yards of total offense. The Raider defense forced one punt all night.

After holding the Panthers on fourth down on their opening possession, the Raiders got the ball back at their 15-yard line. Troy Dendy fumbled on the first play and Chapman quickly capitalized with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Colton Bailey to Brandon Adams.

The Raiders ensuing drive was indicative of what was to come. Laurens was faced with fourth down three times during the drive. After a roughing the kicker penalty on one fourth down and a pass interference penalty on the second fourth down, Laurens put together a 16-play drive that came up with a 23-yard field goal from Devon Hubner to make the score 7-3.

Chapman marched down the field and scored on a 7-yard run by DJ Twitty to make the score 14-3. Laurens answered with a Duane Martin 34-yard sweep to narrow the margin to 14-10.

In the second quarter, Chapman reeled off 35 unanswered points to put the game away with two quarters still to play.

Another Twitty touchdown was followed by a Raider fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Fifteen seconds later, Twitty scored again and the score was now 28-10.

Colton Bailey connected with Patrick Phongsat on back-to-back touchdown passes to make the score 42-10 with 1:58 left to play in the first half.

After a Ryan Campbell interception, Chapman added their final first half score with 4.6 seconds left in the half. Bailey threw behind the line of scrimmage to Richard Tucker who flipped it to a streaking Phongsat for a 34-yard scoring toss.

A dazed Raiders squad went to the locker room at halftime down 49-10.

Chapman added two more touchdowns in the second half and Laurens also added two. Martin scored on a 6-yard run and Carado Ray scored on a 5-yard run for the Raiders.

Troy Dendy was a bright spot for the Raiders offense. The senior running back rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries. Martin rushed for 90 yards on nine carries.

Bailey was 17 for 24 for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Twitty ran for 145 yards on 24 carries and four touchdowns. Phongsat caught six passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns.

Laurens (1-1) will travel to Irmo next Friday night for a 7:30pm kickoff.
