In the girls game, Laurens Middle School got off to a strong start against Sanders Middle School and was able to hold the lead all four quarters in route to a 24-5 victory.
The Tigers were able to shut out the Yellow Jackets in the first half as they left for the locker rooms with an 11-0 lead. SMS battled back in the third quarter scoring five points but their defense couldn’t hold off the LMS offense as they responded with six in the same quarter. The Tigers would never relinquish their lead as they downed the Jackets 24-5.
Nadia Anderson led all scorers with 10 points and Cederia Bailey added six points. Hayley Cannen led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with three.
LMS improves to 4-5 on the season with a 3-4 conference record as Sanders falls to 2-8 with a 1-6 conference record.
In the boys game, Laurens Middle School defeated Sanders Middle School 50-41 in double overtime despite losing their coach.
The Yellow Jackets started off strong with a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter with the Tigers unable to respond. It would be the Jackets who would have to fight their way back to tie at the end of regulation as the Tigers took complete control of the game.
With the Tigers up 33-30 and 14 seconds left on the clock, TyQuavis Johnson would jump early on a pass for the steal and drill the game-tying three to send the game to the first overtime.
The first overtime would be very controversial as a shooting foul and two technical fouls were called with seconds left on the clock. The two technical fouls were called on LMS head coach Will Buie nearing the end of the first overtime, resulting in TyQuavis Johnson tying the game at 41 all and Buie’s ejection from the contest.
The second overtime was fairly one-sided as the Tigers scored nine unanswered points to win the game 50-41.
Laurens Middle School boys and girls will take on Northside Middle School and Sanders Middle School boys and girls will take on Merriwether Middle School. Both games will be at their respective home courts and both will take place on January 11.
