Patriots down Lady Raiders, 10-3

An early lead from the JL Mann Patriots would prove to be too much for the Lady Raiders Softball team (0-1) as they fell 10-3 in their regular season opener.

Pitchers Rachel Delio and Taylor Powell accounted for 10 strikeouts, eight earned runs, nine walks, and only allowed five hits. Rachel Delio is accredited the loss.

Laurens started off in a hole as JL Mann scored three runs in the first inning. The Patriot scores would come off of a stolen base, a fielders choice, and a groundout leaving the Lady Raiders playing catch up right out of the gate.

Laurens was able to respond as Cassy Plaia made her way to second on a shot to left field before being sent home by Octavia Johnson to give the Raiders their first run. A failed stolen base attempt and two groundouts would end the inning with the Raiders trailing 3-1.

After a scoreless second inning, The Patriots would add three runs in the third inning after back-to-back walks set up JL Mann's Shepard for a three-run homerun over the right-field fence. Plaia would add another single in the bottom of the third but she would be left stranded going into the fourth, leaving the Raiders down 6-1.

Laurens would have a rough go at it on the mound at the start of the fourth inning as the Patriot double that began the inning would be followed by three straight walks. However, the inning would end after a pop fly to center field and back-to-back strikeouts.

Another scoreless inning in the fourth gave the Patriots an 8-1 lead. Laurens was allowed only one run off of a fielders choice in the top of the fifth and left two Patriots stranded on base.

Kauree Munyan was able to get things going with one out by taking advantage of a bad throw to first base and stretched her single into a double. After another Raider strikeout, it was Jillian Sward who stepped up to the plate. After taking the first pitch, Sward lined the ball to center field sending Munyan home giving the Raiders their second run of the night. Ultimately, Sward would be left stranded as JL Mann held onto a 9-2 lead going into the sixth inning.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Patriots would start the seventh inning at the top of their order. JL Mann was able to score one run off of a wild pitch but that would be their only run scored with two left on base. Michaela Smith was hit by a pitch to get on base to give the Raiders a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh. A single from Toni Hughes would send Smith home giving the Raiders their third and final run of the game.

Laurens will travel to Greer on Friday to take on the Riverside High School Warriors in a doubleheader.
